LOS ANGELES, CA – A Step to Freedom (ASF), is a Los Angeles based non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that will combat “Period Poverty” with their annual Blessing Bags Giveaway.  The giving event activated ASF volunteers and supporters to canvas homeless encampments in South Los Angeles distributing 600 Blessing Bags to homeless individuals.  Each bag was individually wrapped and filled with toiletries, personal hygiene items, make up, nail polish and a hand-written note from a volunteer.  The giving event was birthed from a lack of feminine products for homeless women on their menstrual cycle.

Prior to the giving event Kenya Kirkland spoke to Councilman Curren D. Price Jr, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Where:  164 W. 80th Street Los Angeles, CA 90003

Who:  A Step to Freedom, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Councilman Curren D. Price Jr., and partners Free from Hardship, Breathe Love, and South Bay Mambas

What:  Press Conference and Annual Blessing Bags Giveaway – An annual giving event with the purpose of addressing “Period Poverty.”  ASF distributes bags with toiletries and feminine hygiene items to homeless individuals.

Why:  Homeless women and girls in Los Angeles experience Period Poverty which refers to inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products and education. Meeting the feminine hygiene needs of our most vulnerable population is a fundamental issue of human rights, dignity and public health.

“I created this event because homeless women are often forgotten on Mother’s Day.  I wanted to give a small gesture to bring them joy and show them someone cares, and they are not alone,” said Kenya Kirkland, Executive Director of ASF.

Donations for the Blessing Bags were collected between March 1st and the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The amazing ASF volunteers helped prepare the bags, wrote notes, and distributed them in homeless encampments throughout South Los Angeles.

About A Step to Freedom

The primary focus of ASF is to provide justice impacted and homeless individuals with a safe and sober living environment and the support and resources to help them reach self-sufficiency.   The organization was founded in 1991 by Kenneth Croom when he found himself struggling to find resources and support after being released from prison. In 2003 Mr. Croom’s daughter, Kenya Kirkland, took on the reins of the organization and began implementing programming aimed at achieving her father’s goals.  As executive director Kenya continues to be the driving force behind the organization.
